HVAC Questions & Answers

Everything we get asked most about air conditioning, heating, commercial refrigeration and how we work — answered properly, not in one line.

General & scheduling

What areas does Panda Heating and Cooling serve?

We are based in Celina, TX and serve Prosper, Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Allen, Parker, Little Elm, The Colony, Carrollton, Richardson, Garland, Aubrey, Melissa, Anna and the wider Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex across Collin, Denton and Dallas counties.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency HVAC service?

Yes. Our regular hours are Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM, and our emergency line at 469-919-7646 is answered 24 hours a day for no-cool, no-heat and commercial refrigeration emergencies — including weekends and holidays.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Panda Heating and Cooling is a fully licensed and insured Texas HVAC contractor, license number TACLA128438C, serving North Dallas since 2008. Every technician is background-checked and continuously trained.

How much does a service call cost?

We charge a flat diagnostic fee that covers a full system evaluation and a written repair quote, and we tell you that number before we come out. If you approve the repair on the same visit, the diagnostic fee is credited toward the work. Comfort Club members pay a reduced rate.

Do you offer financing on new systems?

Yes — we are a registered dealer for Service Finance Company, and their equal-payment plans go up to 60 months at 0% interest on approved credit. Term and rate are set by the lender under its own programs and approval criteria. We apply with you at the quote, usually get a decision in minutes, and show you the monthly payment alongside the purchase price.

What is the Comfort Club?

Our maintenance membership. Members get two precision tune-ups a year scheduled automatically, priority dispatch ahead of non-members, a standing discount on repairs, reduced after-hours rates and documented service records for warranty claims.

What brands do you service?

All of them. Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, American Standard, York, Amana, Bryant, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Heil and every other major residential and light commercial brand — no matter who installed it.

Can you help if my system was installed by someone else?

Absolutely. A large share of our work is repairing, correcting and maintaining systems installed by other contractors, including builder-grade equipment in new construction.

Heating

Why does my furnace turn on then shut off after a few seconds?

Classic short cycling on ignition — nearly always a dirty flame sensor that cannot prove the flame, or a cracked/failing igniter. Both are inexpensive parts and quick fixes. If it is instead running long and tripping a limit, the cause is usually restricted airflow from a dirty filter or closed vents.

Is a cracked heat exchanger really dangerous?

Yes. A cracked heat exchanger can let combustion gases including carbon monoxide into the air you breathe. It is not repairable — the exchanger or the furnace has to be replaced. We verify with a visual inspection and a combustion analyzer before making that call, and we show you what we found.

My furnace smells like burning dust on the first cold day — is that normal?

Usually yes. Dust that settled on the heat exchanger over the summer burns off in the first cycle or two. If the smell is electrical, acrid, or lasts longer than an hour of runtime, shut the system off and call us.

How fast can you get out for no heat?

No-heat calls are priority-dispatched, and our line is answered 24/7 through the winter. Most North Dallas no-heat calls are seen the same day.

How long does a furnace last in Texas?

Because our heating season is short, gas furnaces here often reach 18–25 years. The practical limit is usually the heat exchanger and parts availability, not the burner. Once repair costs pass about a third of replacement cost on a system older than 15 years, replacement is normally the better investment.

Should I replace the AC at the same time?

If the AC is within a couple of years of the furnace in age, yes — replacing both together costs less than two separate jobs, guarantees a properly matched coil and blower, and preserves the full efficiency rating of the pair. If the AC is much newer, we will match a new furnace to your existing coil.

How much does a furnace tune-up cost?

We quote a flat rate before we book, and Comfort Club members pay a reduced rate. Call 469-919-7646 and we will give you the number on the phone — no meter running, no surprise at the end.

Do you run furnace tune-up specials?

Yes, seasonal pricing in the autumn before heating season starts. If you have gas heat and air conditioning both, the Comfort Club usually beats two separate tune-ups — it bundles the autumn heating visit and the spring cooling visit with priority dispatch and a repair discount.

How often should a furnace be serviced?

Once a year, in the fall, before you need it. If you have a heat pump that both heats and cools, service it twice a year — spring and fall — because it runs year-round.

Is a tune-up worth it if the furnace is working fine?

That is exactly when it is worth it. A tune-up is diagnostic: it finds the parts that are drifting out of spec while they are still cheap to replace and while you are not without heat.

Why is ice building up on my heat pump in winter?

A light frost that clears during the defrost cycle is normal. Solid ice that never melts means the defrost cycle is not running — usually a failed defrost board or sensor, or a reversing valve that will not shift. Do not chip the ice off; call us before the coil is damaged.

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air on heat mode?

Heat pump supply air is naturally cooler than gas furnace air — around 90–100°F rather than 130°. That feels lukewarm but is normal. If it is genuinely cold, the reversing valve, charge or defrost control is the likely fault.

What is emergency heat and why is my bill so high?

Emergency heat bypasses the compressor and runs electric resistance strips only — effective but expensive. If your system is stuck there, something is preventing normal heat pump operation and it needs diagnosis before the next bill arrives.

Do heat pumps work in Texas winters?

Extremely well. Modern heat pumps hold full capacity into the 20s°F and keep working below that with backup heat assisting. For a climate like Celina’s, a heat pump is one of the most cost-effective heating choices available.

Is a heat pump cheaper to run than a gas furnace?

In this region a modern heat pump usually costs less to run than electric resistance heat by a very large margin, and is competitive with or cheaper than gas depending on current gas and electric rates. Dual-fuel gives you the cheaper of the two automatically.

Cooling

How fast can you get here for an AC repair?

We hold same-day slots for no-cool calls every day in Celina, Prosper, Frisco, McKinney, Plano and the surrounding Collin County cities. Call 469-919-7646 and we will give you a real arrival window, not a vague “sometime today.” After hours, our emergency line is answered 24/7.

Why is my AC running but blowing warm air?

The most common causes are a failed capacitor stopping the outdoor compressor, a tripped breaker on the condenser circuit, a refrigerant leak, or a dirty condenser coil that cannot reject heat. A frozen indoor coil from a clogged filter will do the same thing. All of these are diagnosable in one visit.

Do you charge a diagnostic fee?

Yes — a flat diagnostic fee covers a full system evaluation and a written repair quote. If you approve the repair on that visit, the fee is applied to the work. Comfort Club members pay a reduced rate.

Do you repair all AC brands?

Yes. We service Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, American Standard, York, Amana, Bryant, Daikin and every other major brand — regardless of who installed it.

How much does a new AC system cost in North Dallas?

Most complete residential AC replacements in this area land between roughly $6,000 and $14,000 depending on tonnage, efficiency (SEER2), whether the furnace or air handler is being replaced with it, and any duct or electrical work required. We give a firm written quote after a free in-home evaluation — never a phone estimate.

How long does an AC installation take?

A straight change-out is a one-day job. If we are replacing the furnace or air handler at the same time, or correcting ductwork, plan on one to two days. We protect floors, haul off the old equipment and clean up completely.

What SEER2 rating should I buy in Texas?

The federal minimum in the South is 14.3 SEER2. For a house that runs air conditioning eight months a year, stepping up to 16–18 SEER2 with a two-stage or variable-speed compressor usually pays for itself in comfort and humidity control long before it pays for itself in kilowatt-hours. We will show you the operating-cost math on each option.

Do you offer financing?

Yes — through Service Finance Company, with equal monthly payments over terms up to 60 months at 0% interest on approved credit. The plans you qualify for are the lender’s decision and their programs change through the year, so ask us for the current terms when we quote your system.

How much does an AC tune-up cost?

We quote a flat rate before we book, so there is no meter running and no surprise at the end. Comfort Club members pay a reduced rate and get priority scheduling. Call 469-919-7646 and we will give you the number on the phone.

How long does an AC tune-up take?

About 60 to 90 minutes for a single system. A two-system home runs closer to two hours. If we find something that needs repair we quote it before touching it, and you decide whether it happens on that visit.

Is an AC tune-up actually worth it?

It depends on the system, and we will tell you honestly. On anything over five years old it usually pays for itself the first time it catches a weakening capacitor or a blocking condensate drain. On a two-year-old system still under warranty the case is weaker, and we would rather say so than sell you one.

Do you offer a tune-up special?

We run seasonal pricing in spring and autumn. If you have more than one system, or you plan to stay in the house, the Comfort Club is usually better value than a one-off — it bundles both seasonal visits with priority scheduling and a repair discount.

Do you really answer the phone at 2 a.m.?

Yes. Our emergency line at 469-919-7646 is monitored around the clock. If we cannot get a technician to you immediately, we will tell you straight and give you a real time — we do not leave people guessing in the heat.

What counts as an HVAC emergency?

No cooling when outdoor temperatures are above about 95°, no heat below about 45°, any burning smell or electrical arcing, water pouring from an indoor unit, or a commercial refrigeration failure putting inventory at risk. Anything involving a gas smell is a fire-department call first — leave the building and call 911, then call us.

Is after-hours service more expensive?

There is an after-hours rate, and we quote it to you before we dispatch, not after the work is done. Comfort Club members receive a discount on emergency rates.

Commercial HVAC

Do you work after hours so we do not have to close?

Yes. Most of our commercial change-outs and crane lifts are scheduled for evenings, early mornings or weekends specifically so the business keeps trading.

Can you take over an existing maintenance contract?

Yes. We will inspect every unit, document current condition with photos, flag anything urgent, and give you a written maintenance proposal with per-unit pricing.

What size commercial equipment do you handle?

Light commercial — typically packaged rooftop units and split systems from 3 to 25 tons, plus commercial refrigeration. For very large central plant work we will tell you honestly if it is outside our lane.

Do you offer service agreements for multiple sites?

Yes, and they are worth setting up properly rather than calling ad hoc: consistent per-unit reporting, one schedule across every location, priority emergency dispatch and negotiated labor rates.

Can you work around our opening hours?

Yes. Scheduled work happens before open or after close for most of our commercial customers. Emergency cover runs 24/7 at the after-hours rate, quoted on the phone before we dispatch.

We are opening a new location. Can you quote the whole fit-out?

Yes — equipment sizing from a load calculation rather than a guess, rooftop or split systems, ventilation, and the refrigeration package. Talk to us early: it is far cheaper to get the curbs and the electrical right at build than to correct them afterwards.

How long does a rooftop unit replacement take?

A single-unit straight change-out with a crane is usually a one-day job once the equipment is on site. Curb adaptation, new gas or electrical runs, or multi-unit projects extend that — we give you a schedule up front and work around your operating hours.

How long do commercial RTUs last?

Typically 15–20 years in this climate with maintenance, and noticeably less without it. Kitchen exhaust and grease exposure shorten that considerably, which is why quarterly coil cleaning pays for itself in restaurants.

How often should rooftop units be serviced?

Twice a year for most sites, quarterly for restaurants and anywhere with heavy grease or dust in the air. Filters and belts are the cheap parts that prevent the expensive ones.

Do you handle the crane for a change-out?

Yes. We coordinate the lift, curb adaptation or a new curb where the footprint does not match, gas and electrical reconnection, flashing, and commissioning. We schedule the lift for a day that does not shut you down.

One of our units is much worse than the others. Replace it or keep repairing?

We will give you the numbers on both rather than the answer. A written condition report per unit is exactly what makes that decision straightforward instead of a guess — you can see which units are near the end and plan the spend across a year.

Commercial refrigeration

How fast can you respond to a refrigeration emergency?

Commercial refrigeration is our highest-priority dispatch category, 24 hours a day, because the cost clock is running on your inventory. Call 469-919-7646 and tell us it is a refrigeration emergency.

My walk-in is running but not holding temperature — what is wrong?

Most often an iced-over evaporator coil from a defrost failure, a dirty condenser coil, a refrigerant leak, or a door gasket letting warm humid air in. All four are same-visit diagnoses.

Do you install new walk-in coolers?

Yes — new walk-in cooler and freezer boxes and refrigeration systems, plus replacement condensing units and evaporators on existing boxes.

Do you handle restaurants, or only retail?

Both, plus convenience stores, medical and dental practices, churches, warehouses and schools. Anywhere with a walk-in, an ice machine, reach-in cases or rooftop units.

Can you work outside our trading hours?

Yes, and for most kitchens that is the sensible way to do scheduled work. Emergency cover runs 24/7 at the after-hours rate, which we tell you on the phone before we dispatch.

We have several sites. Can you cover all of them?

Yes. Multi-site agreements are worth setting up properly rather than calling ad hoc — you get consistent reporting per unit, one schedule, and negotiated labor rates.

What temperature should a walk-in cooler hold?

Generally 35–38°F for a cooler. If yours is climbing above 41°F you are into the food-safety danger zone and it needs attention immediately.

There is ice all over the evaporator — what does that mean?

The defrost cycle is not doing its job: a failed defrost timer or board, a burnt-out defrost heater, or a defrost termination sensor out of calibration. Melting it manually is a temporary fix at best.

How fast can you get to a failing walk-in?

We are in Celina, so Prosper and Frisco are a short run and McKinney is not much further. For a walk-in with product in it we treat the call as an emergency regardless of the hour. What we will not do is promise a fixed arrival time during a heatwave when every commercial system in North Texas is under load at once.

Can I keep running the cooler while it is failing?

Usually yes, and usually you should — a cooler holding 45°F is still doing more for your product than a cooler that is off. The exception is a compressor making a grinding or screaming noise, which means switch it off and move the stock. Running that turns a compressor repair into a compressor replacement.

Do you work on refrigeration nobody else will touch?

Often. Most residential HVAC companies in this area do not do commercial refrigeration at all, which is why restaurants end up calling three places. We carry the common walk-in failure parts — contactors, fan motors, defrost timers, thermostats and door gaskets — so most calls finish on the first visit.

What temperature should a walk-in freezer run?

0°F or below, typically between -10°F and 0°F. Product quality degrades quickly above that even before it thaws.

Why is the freezer door frozen shut?

The door frame heater wire or the gasket has failed, letting humid air condense and freeze at the seal. It is a straightforward repair, but leaving it damages the door and drives up the refrigeration load.

What temperature should a walk-in freezer hold?

0°F is the working standard for frozen storage. A few degrees above will not spoil product immediately but it shortens shelf life and starts the freeze-thaw cycle that ruins texture. If your freezer is sitting at 15°F it is not 'a bit warm' — something is wrong.

My freezer is full of ice but the product is still frozen. Is it urgent?

It is not an emergency tonight, but do not leave it. Ice buildup means the defrost cycle has failed, and it gets worse in one direction only. Left long enough it blocks the evaporator entirely and the box warms up with the compressor running flat out, which is how a $300 defrost repair becomes a compressor.

Can thawed product be refrozen?

That is a food safety judgement rather than an HVAC one, and it depends on how warm it got and for how long. This is exactly why we tell people to write down the temperature and the time when they first notice a problem. Your health inspector will ask.

How often should a commercial ice machine be cleaned?

At minimum twice a year, and quarterly in hard-water areas or high-volume kitchens. North Texas water is hard enough that quarterly is the realistic answer for most restaurants.

Why is my ice machine making small or cloudy ice?

Usually scale on the evaporator plate, a water supply or float problem, or a low refrigerant charge. Cloudy ice specifically points at water quality and mineral content — a filtration issue as much as a mechanical one.

Why is my ice machine making small or hollow cubes?

Almost always scale on the evaporator plate, low water pressure, or a failing water inlet valve. It is a water problem before it is a refrigeration problem, and it is usually fixed in one visit.

How often should a commercial ice machine be cleaned?

Every three to six months in North Texas, and closer to three if you are on hard municipal water. Manufacturers require documented cleaning to honour a warranty claim, so it is also the paperwork that protects the machine.

The machine runs but produces no ice at all. What is that?

Could be water supply, could be a stuck harvest cycle, could be refrigerant. The useful detail for us is whether it completes a cycle and drops nothing, or never gets to harvest at all. Tell us which when you call and we will bring the right parts.

Maintenance & tune-ups

How often should HVAC be serviced?

Twice a year for a system that both heats and cools: cooling in spring, heating in fall. A heat pump should always be done twice, since it runs year-round.

How often should I change my air filter?

A 1-inch pleated filter every 30–60 days; a 4- or 5-inch media filter every 6–12 months. If you have pets or allergies, check monthly. A restricted filter is the single most common cause of both frozen coils in summer and limit trips in winter.

Does maintenance really lower my electric bill?

Yes, measurably. A dirty condenser coil and a low or overcharged refrigerant charge each cost real efficiency, and together they can easily add 20% to your cooling cost.

Need it fixed today?

Same-day service across Celina, Prosper, Frisco, McKinney and Plano — and a real person on the emergency line 24/7. Tell us what your system is doing and we will give you a straight answer.
