Frost is the symptom, not the fault

A freezer packed with frost has almost always got a defrost problem rather than a cooling problem. Every freezer ices its evaporator in normal use, and every freezer is supposed to melt that ice off on a timed cycle. When the defrost heater, the timer or the termination sensor fails, ice builds until it blocks airflow completely — and then the box warms up while the compressor runs constantly trying to fix it.

Chipping the ice off gets you a day. It comes back within the week, because the thing that removes it is still broken.

Door seals cost more than people think

The single most common thing we find on a struggling freezer is not a failed part. It is a door that no longer seals — a torn gasket, a dropped hinge, or a heater wire in the frame that has failed so the door frosts itself shut and gets forced.

Warm humid kitchen air leaking into a freezer condenses and freezes instantly. That is where the frost comes from, that is what the compressor is fighting, and it is why the energy bill went up before anything obviously broke. A gasket is a cheap part.

What it costs, and when we come out

Commercial diagnostic is $120, or $200 outside Monday to Saturday 8–5 and on Sundays. A freezer failure is worth calling out of hours for in a way a warm dining room is not — frozen product has a much shorter grace period once it starts to thaw, and it cannot be refrozen and sold. Full pricing here.
